SF NewTech

After the RSA conference, I headed home to change clothes and head to Mighty in SF for SFNewTech.

Look, I’m not going to lie to you. Normally I hate SF New Tech. It basically goes like this. 4-10 awful .com company demos, followed by 5 minutes of open mic which sometimes turns into “I need a developer who will work for free/for options/for peanuts”. and then 40 more minutes of demos.

Tonight was very different, with great demos, from:

  • Zilok
  • SomaMedia
  • Splunk
  • Pleo
  • oQo

… and a few others that I can’t remember.

I think Pleo, and their five animaltronic dinosaurs stole the show. Their constant screaming during the bad demos made me very happy.

Their marketing girl was smart, presentable, and totally in love with their product, which is a baby dinosaur with 13 sensors, 6 microprocessors, motors, a web cam, usb interface, sd card interface, and so much more.

I feel this product is aimed at women, ages 28-35, who can’t have children or cats. It’s very livelike, and soon, it will have an SDK (They call it the PDK!)

  • I went to the pleoworld web site and turned on the volume, and my dog completely freaked out at the sounds. She was just standing there, staring at the laptop with that adorable cocked-head dog "wtf" expression.

In other words, I need a baby robot dinosaur.
